Principal's Message 5/10/12 |
SCMS Newsletter, 5-10-12by Kent Messer Dear
SCMS Parents and Guardians: This
will be an exciting weekend at SCMS with the performance of Cheaper By The Dozen
by our theater department. This
classic is based on the original book written by the Gilbreth children as they
recall their fond memories in the house! The play is most similar to the 1950s
movie starring Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy. Show dates are May 10 – 12 at 7:00
PM. Tickets will be on sale at the SCMS school store through tomorrow and at the
door. Tickets are $5.00 for students and $7.00 for adults. "Old Fashioned"
concessions will be available as well! We hope everyone can make it out to support
our talented theater program. Tomorrow,
Friday, May 11th, will be the halfway point of the last six week grading
period. As we head into the final three
weeks of the school year, please encourage your son or daughter to maintain a
quality work ethic and focus on all assignments, tests, and projects. These last few weeks will go fast, - please
feel free to email or call your son’s or daughter’s teachers, counselors, and/or
assistant principals if you need any assistance. Have
a great weekend and a Happy Mother’s Day.
SCMS
Success VASE We had eighty Sloan
Creek Middle students compete last weekend at the Jr. VASE (Visual Art
Scholastic Event) in McKinney. By the
time it was over, we left with over sixty 4s (the highest possible score you can
receive) and twelve State winners.
Congratulations to Mrs. Arnold and all of her talented Art students. 6th Grade
Orchestra The 6th
grade beginning orchestra received first division superior ratings from all
three judges at the Sandy Lake Festival this week. This is the highest rating a group can
receive. They received wonderful
comments on their sound and stage presence.
Our bass section even received comments that they were the best bass
section of the day! Congratulations to
all of our 6th grade orchestra students and Mrs. Gearhart and Mr.
Sloan. 6th Grade
Choir The 6th
grade choir received all one's from all the three judges at the Sandy Lake
Festival this week, giving them a 1st Division—which is the highest rating
possible. The judges were extremely
complimentary of our performance with their 3 part - Soprano, Alto, Baritone -
singing. Congratulations to all of our
6th grade choir students and Mrs. Chapman and Mr. Fleming. HEB Excellence in

Reading at SCMS Tomorrow
afternoon we will hold our 3rd annual Summer Reading Fair at
SCMS. This is a time when rising
7th and 8th grade students can visit with teachers who are
sponsoring a book for our Summer Reading program. Over the past week, students were asked by
their English teacher to narrow their choices down to three books. After students visit with the sponsors of
their top three choices tomorrow, they make a final
decision. The
Sloan Creek Summer Reading Project is voluntary, but we hope each student
participates. Students who choose not to participate in the summer
program will be given a reading assignment during the first 6 weeks of the new
school year, along with an assignment that assesses their understanding and
comprehension of the book they read. For

Year
Morning
Athletics for the Remainder of the Year ALL
athletes should be working out at either 8:00 am or 8:45 am every day. If they
do not work out (and don't have a medical excuse) they will be counted absent.
This is considered truant in the same way skipping math is considered truant. If
a student needs academic tutoring, we highly encourage them to attend tutorials
with their teachers, or visit the CAT, before or after school. If they attend tutorials, they must still
attend an athletic workout. If they come in for tutorials at 8:00 am, the
tutoring teacher will send them out the door to be ready to workout at 8:45 am.
If the teacher requests to meet with a student at 8:45 am, the student must have
attended the 8:00 am workout. The only reason that a student should not attend a
morning workout is because the teacher has made previous arrangements with the
coach about the need to have them from 8:00-9:30 am for tutorials. Please work with your son or daughter on this
process to ensure that he/she attends athletic workouts every day. If you have any questions or need additional
information on these procedures, please contact melody_herring@lovejoyisd.net.
After
School Procedures for the Spring As
school dismisses at 3:50 every day, we are asking our students to exit the
building by 4:05. If they remain in the building, we ask that they be in a
classroom for tutorials, the CAT, the Library, or the Fine Arts wing for
rehearsals. We will be sweeping the halls between 3:50—4:05 asking students to
move to their designated location. If your student needs to remain on campus
past 4:05, please encourage them to remain in tutorials, the CAT, the Library,
or the Fine Arts wing until you arrive. 2012
